WAR DIARY (AAR, DAR)

WWII Campaign - DevLog

Artie vs , 27/06/2008

Gentlemen,
I want to keep you informed about the upcoming WWII Campaign development progress. There is the brief developer log in my poor english, which may discover some implemented and/or planned features. I do not mention the general campaign principles, I hope everyone is able to deduce them. And ofcourse - nothing is definitive, anything can be changed in the final state...

2008-06-27
Because all the progress was almost based on the internal things which tells nothing to anyone, this devlog was not updated. The good news is that the main campaign compotents are near completion and the closed betatest will be started during July/August. If there will be no serious problems or lot of bugs, the campaign will be started after this autumn.

2008-05-16
Finished the full link between the campaign and the PBEM exchange system.

2008-05-07
Based on the command queue changes was started work on the HQHQ - Headquarters [ENG]
interface. Brief test of the team autobalancing was done too.

2008-04-28
Finished automatic army conflicts solver, started the improvements and changes of the command queue for the unit commands chaining.

2008-04-19

graphs
There is the another devlog update - after long delay caused by job issues and enhancing the WaWWaW - World at War
features (the world ladder, new commander profiles, improved graphs and statistics and - that's new - the time filter option in the WaW ladder). Meanwhile there was many of the bugs fixed and the automatic army conflicts solver implemented (almost). Now the work on the campaign will be continuing more fluid, as I hope.

2008-03-11
Closed testing of army movements, conflicts and attacks. Lot of bugs discovered - it doesn't makes me happy. ;)

2008-27-02
Additional army icons added, full list of armies and their parameters added, some missing events inserted. The strategic map was remade in Ajax implementation, which gives the player more comfortable control (faster responses, etc.)

2008-02-12
Internal changes of the unit states, unit without direct command handling, auto-retreats and territory conquering added. The retreating unit heads directly to the enemy sometimes, there are still some bugs.

Orders pulldown menu, german army advance and the obvious french retreat ;)

2008-02-08
Main campaing events (like fall of France - Vichy establishing) added. Complete army list finished (not definitive). The graphic icons for most of the armies are still missing, I am too lazy to do them now ;)

2008-02-01
Army recruiting system, convoys and rail transport added.

2008-01-28

Dynamic weather (weather forecast not visible there)
Dynamic weather implemented, with respect to the geographical location and season. There is the effect to the unit movement missing still (especially the russian autumn/spring mud).

2008-01-20
Railway stations and some airfields added, territory infrastructure&terrain implemented (affecting the unit movement).

2008-01-15
Closed test of the strategic map, territory and port connections, territory names, etc.

What to do
- automatic & player battles, conflict results
- finish the airfiled placement, implement the air transport
- specila operations (beach landings, airdrops)
- events history log
- teams autobalancing
- HQ interface
- entrenchment & infrastructure building
- campaign manual

...and I probably forgot about something, too :)

Around 1-3 months, probably. It depends how much flaws discover the betatesting stage ;)

Artie.

Is this designed to be played as an individual? Or is it a team based thing?

What inputs do we need to make to record battles?

What game/games is it designed for?

I agree also that it looks very good.

It is team based, the battle results will be reported as a common ladder game, the campaign just suggest the battle parameters at the beginning. It is designed for the Steel Panthers and whole Combat Mission series (except the Shock Force, ofcourse). Maybe it will be usable for Theatre of War game too.

How will teams work? I supose that once a player chooses a side he will have to stick with it for all duration of campaign. But will we just choose axis or allies, or actually the nation? Cant imagine many picking the french

There will be three teams (Axis, Allies, Russia), players just picks one of them. The army selection depends on the availability and on the players agreement too. (For example: The italian army meets the british army. The axis players do not want to play for italians and if his opponent agrees, he can play with german army instead - fun first, it is just a game). There probably will be two different suggested battle parameters too. One "easy&benevolent" and one "historical&real". In the first one the players can change what they want, in the second one not.

OK another question. Is it like the Blitz Europa thing? Or is it a proper time related campaign. The Blitz domination thing is just a map [a very nice looking one] but battles can be played in any time period and it is not historically correct.

It would be great to play this campaign.
But why did You choose the operational/strategical scale instead of tactical ?

The campaign will be running realtime and respecting the history at the beginning (german invasion to France). There are implemented major events like fall of France, Hungary signup to Axis, US reinforcements, etc. which may occurs during the whole game. There are real/history army formations, the overall strategy must be respected, etc. etc.
It is very hard to expect anything past the campaign start, it will be fully in the players hands. They may play it "historical" or establish some hypothetic situations like successful german invasion to England, anything they wish (and which will be allowed by the campaign mechanism and rules). In the game can (for example) some kind of D-Day start before 1944 or never, depending on the players.

In any case, the campaing is trying to stick with the history as much as possible, but leave the players some freedom too. It is having different principles than the FGMs Domination.

Shepard: It gives a larger variety of battlefields. But it is not impossible to resize a scale in the future, I have some plans ;)

I would be just like the Hearts of Iron .

How will armies be managed.... a player has 1 army and moves it around? they move on their own and players just pick battles that will happen? havent yet understood that.

Would be nice for each to have 1 army, move it around and get reinforcements snd suffer the casualties... but i supose thats asking for too much :)

Each player is having from 1 to 3 armies (depends on how much he wants to play and how many overall players is present). Player is moving the army/armies on the strategic map from/to the adjacent territories (except the ship/train transport). If there is the enemy army in some adjacent territory present, player can move the army there and the battle is started. It is like a classic computer game, nothing bizzare ;)

Players can move on their own or respect the general plan established by HQ (which is better, ofcourse). The army experience and casualties will be counted in, but not sure about the game effect. Maybe just for the "real&historic" battle setups, it can significantly unbalance the battles.

Well done Artie. This is possibly the best thing to be offerred by a gaming website. Its almost a Combat Mission Campaigns system.

Maybe (like in Hearts of Iron) You could add leader's boosts, which will give bonus points to units. For example:
- Erwin Rommel: Offensive doctrine
- Montgomery: Deffensive doctrine
Blah, blah, blah...

Looks lovely, very excited about this! Yummy, finally a CM-campaign....

Is it commercial - do we have to pay for this? I mean, we are WAW right?

No paids will be needed, probably. Just to be a WaW member and be out of a bootcamp. But it was not finally decided yet ;)

I've just noticed something. Are there any fortifications in this campaign ? The French are actually being kicked out of a Maginot Line, shouldn't that be impossible or something ? Or I'm just overrating the French will to fight .

There will be some kind of fortification, probably players (HQ) created during the campaign too.

Very nice and crisp graphics - and I just noticed (I may be dull) but you have at least three different zooming levels. Impressive.

Is the minimum size of unit an army? And if you got between 1 and 3 armies per player, how many players do you think will be needed to play say the initial Battle of France? Can several sessions be played at once, so I can join the 32-player 'WAW-Tournament' as British and play a seperate Continuation-War with my friends?

When you said that it can be used with CM, how will the battle parameters be generated? How much can the commander influence the setting/area and the troop-composition/force-mix?

My screen comes from the game 'Hearts of Iron' it's not a campaign.

Bubonicus: No zoom levels, see Shepard's post.
Yes, the unit scale is army, corps group in some few cases. I am expecting that for running the campaing at minimal level there will be something about 10-15 players needed, the maximum number of players will be something about 50. The campaign covers whole war, beggining the battle of France and duration of it will be a year or two of a real time. The battle locations and date will depends on the situation on the strategy map. The effect on the forces compositions is not planned/tested yet, but can be added. In any case, everyone can join or leave the campaign whenever he wish, he just cannot switch the sides (Axis/Allies/Russia) during the campaign.

And thank you for the feedback Artie, looking great! CM-friendly or not, it sounds like a winner.
